Spartanburg, SC – Leslie Rodgers filed as a candidate for Spartanburg City Council District 2 yesterday. She is a longtime business development and marketing professional in rapidly scaling businesses in the sustainability industry.
“I decided to become a candidate for Spartanburg City Council District 2 because I see a great need for someone with a background in sustainable communities to be a voice for the citizens of Spartanburg and District 2 as the city develops. Great things are happening in Spartanburg, yet I hear little discussion about how to make certain that the city, neighborhoods, and lives we are building here can last beyond the short term.
“Yes, our City pays to have recycling bins at our homes, and we have hybrid buses. But we must think about the big picture, what sustainable growth looks like, and not think that these good but small individual decisions are enough to deal with the problems of a growing city and economy as we build toward our future. Based on Spartanburg’s current infrastructure, we are not keeping up with the growth of the city. Growth should be encouraged, however, there needs to be strategic planning around infrastructure to support that growth. A lot of time and energy is put into the 10-block radius of downtown and I support this work, but outside of downtown new schools and housing developments are being built without the same intentionality of surrounding space.
“Our community has the potential to drive meaningful change—especially when the right people come together and collaborate effectively. In order to protect Spartanburg’s resources - land, water, air, and people we will need to make decisions in the near future that impact the kind of community our children will inherit - I want to be a voice for the long-term preservation of Spartanburg’s natural resources and the community that cherishes our home city.
“I am a mother of 3 boys - ages 20,14,11 that have grown up here and have had connections to wonderful people here, a home where they can thrive. I am grateful that we have had such a supportive neighborhood and community on the Eastside of Spartanburg. I want to give back to our city by helping make sure that the future Spartanburg can maintain itself as a vibrant, welcoming community for everyone.”
With over a decade of experience in climate-solutions businesses, Leslie Rodgers has led business development, marketing strategies, and policy initiatives across the U.S. As the former Director of Sales & Marketing at the commercial composting company Atlas Organics, started right here in Spartanburg, she played a key role in building and launching new markets, and crafting campaigns that connected communities, businesses, and municipalities to practical, sustainable solutions.
